Week 8

This week we assisted on a shoot for a musician. We helped with the styling and setting up. We also helped with the lighting arrangement and loading and editing of the images. I learned that it can get kind of intense working on the set of a shoot. There is a lot of running around to do and it is VERY important to be organized and keep the wires out of the way so that no one gets hurt. Also this week we were given a payed retouch job from a model that lives here. That was also a really great experience because I had never had to do a heavy amount of re touching. The model had a specific idea of how she wanted her images retouched. She loved how I did mine and told me that she is going to have me retouch all of her photographs from now on.

Week 7

On Tuesday we had a really awesome day. We learned how to print color film. We went to a place called Print Space, which is a lab where you can rent a space for a few hours to develop, print, or whatever you need to do with your images. It was a really great experience. The photographer I am interning with was making contact sheets from 9/11. I have always wanted to learn how to print color film and yesterday i had to opportunity to learn. On wednesday we scanned in the contact sheets so that there were digital copies. Thursday we finished scanning in the contact sheets. The photographer had 2 scheduled shoots so we assisted with those also. They were shoots for stock images. I also began shooting for the second part of my assignment about tattoo artists around NY which was assigned by the photographer. I went to Jaz Tattoo and met a really awesome artist.

Week 5

This week was pretty much just dedicated to editing the photos from the fashion shoot last week. All three days were spent on retouching the photographs. The lady who the images were shot for printed out all the pictures and wrote down what she wanted to be edited which was really helpful because a lot of the stuff on the images were things that I would have never thought to edit out but it ended up being a much better result in the long run. It was actually a lot more fun then I thought it would be. It was really cool seeing the final results compared to the original image.

My Assignment for this week was to shoot tattoo shops and artists around NY but since I was only supposed to shoot 3 and only 2 out of the 8 shops I went to let me shoot the artists and / or in the shop I had to improvise a little bit. I also ended up going on n the same day that a lot of activity was happening in Union Square. There were break dancers and the Gay Pride Parade was going on. Here is a link to some of the photographs that I took for this assignment.

The next 2 weeks my assignment is to document tourist attractions around NY.

Week 4

This week was a busy week! On Tuesday we had a fashion shoot in the studio. This was a really awesome experience. I had never been in the studio for a fashion shoot before and it was a lot of fun. I learned how to assist the photographer when she is shooting. I also assisted the model with getting ready for the shoot and changing for each different outfit. All together there were about 40 different outfits. It was great to finally experience that first hand though. On wednesday we pretty much just worked on re-touching images and sorting through all of the images that were taken at the fashion shoot on Tuesday. On Thursday we went to a elementary/ middle school to do a photo shoot for a group of girls who fight against bullying. This was a very interesting experience since i don't really get the opportunity to work with younger kids. It was a learning experience trying to maneuver all the photo equipment and get the kids to do what the photographer wanted all at the same time in a very short time period.

This weeks assignment was to shoot different religions around NYC. Here is a link to my assignment.

Next weeks assignment is to shoot tattoo artists/studios around NY.

Week 3

This week we mainly worked on retouching photos and preparing images to load for stock. I worked on key wording for stock websites. I worked on setting up my site so that it is a better lay out and I also worked on key wording for my own work after my boss showed me how to do key wording. I also learned about organizing the equipment in the studio. Our assignment this week was to document our process on the Staten Island Ferry. I found that to be a very helpful assignment since I don't normally go out and shoot people in public. I really enjoyed this assignment. I got some images that i really like from this. Our next assignment is to document the different religious groups around NYC. I am to photograph Buddhist, Protestant, Hasidic Jew, Roman Catholic, and Muslim.

Week 2

The second week of my internship I did a lot of retouching for the photographer I am interning with. I also learned a lot about loading stock images like where (what sites) and how to load them properly. I also got my first chance to go to a real photo shoot on site. The shoot was for a magazine that was featuring the family that started New York Says Thank You which is a foundation where they go around and help rebuild places that have been destroyed by disasters. I realized on this shoot that doing on location shoots can be very stressful. There is a lot going on and a lot needs to be done and there is also a ton of equipment that needs to be moved from spot to spot. It was really exciting though to see how a real photographer works in these situations.
The last day of my internship this week I went to Tribeca Skyling Studios (affiliated with my other internship). I worked with the company learning how they run their studios. They rent out studio spaces for shoots and casting calls. It was an interesting experience.
My photo assignment for this week was to take the Staten Island Ferry and document my trip.

1st week of Internship

I am interning with Erin Patrice O'brien, a photographer in Brooklyn. I spent the first day with the other intern getting to know her and going around NY photographing the different parts that we were assigned to photograph. In our internship we have been assigned to do a project every week for our own portfolio on top of assisting in the studio. This week our assignment was called "We live in Brooklyn." We went to several different neighborhoods to document to lifestyles and cultural differences between them.

The second day of the internship I was sent out into the city to find Adorama to get a few things for the photographers studio. When I returned we spent the next few hours retouching photos from previous shoots. Then we went out into Brooklyn with the photographer and helped her set up a shoot on the streets where she would document the different cultures that all lived in this one area.
